Time and time again studios try to capture the magic of video games. Time and time again, they fail. Miserably. Unless if they’re about the genre as a whole and not a specific video game. We’re convinced that they’ll never get the whole “adapting a video game to the big screen” thing right, no matter how promising their trailers look. At best, video game movies garner responses of, “Eh... it’s not horrible (Silent Hill),” “This is a great guilty pleasure film (Street Fighter),” or, “That was fun... cheesy, but fun (Mortal Kombat).”

When reaching the end of any good video game, we want to feel like we’ve accomplished something. That tangalbe moment all gamers have experienced, putting the controller down and taking time to reflect on the the story, its characters, and the experience as a whole is both satasfying and reflexive. This is why a bad ending can feel like a betrayal, especially if it’s to a great video game. If a game is awful from the start, we don’t have any expectations for its ending -- or we just stop playing before we get to that point. But if we’re captivated by what a game has to offer, a terrible conclusion will ruin the entire experience.

Once upon a time, dying in a video game was just a source of endless frustration . An enemy catching you off guard, a bottomless pit that you couldn’t leap across. Various stage hazards that were difficult to traverse around. Dying meant trying again until you ran out of lives... unless you decided to ragequit. But as video games became more story and character driven, death became more than just an inconvenience. Suddenly, we cared about that character who lost his or her life. Suddenly, there was no way to press the reset button to try and prevent their untimely demise.

Since the early days of video gaming, there have been many iconic couples, from Princess Daphne and Dirk the Daring of 1983’s “Dragon’s Lair” to Princess Toadstool and Mario. With that said, none of them have gone through as many iterations or as much development as our pick for the greatest videogame couple of all time: Zelda and Link.

All good things must come to an end, but that doesn’t mean that end won’t stay with you. As important as a game’s adventure is, its ending can make or break the overall quality of your experience. Video games put you into the shoes of the characters who are most directly involved in the action and in a way, you often feel like you’re the one taking the journey. This is why we root for the heroes. Maybe the great ending wasn’t story related at all. Maybe it was just the thrill of beating a challenging game or an exciting boss fight. Whatever the case, we always want the hero to come out on top and win the day because when that happens, we want to taste that victory.

Romance isn’t always the highest priority in video games, as such, it can sometimes end up in the backseat. Lately with franchises like Mass Effect and Witcher taking video game storytelling to the next level, romance and romance options have become great freatures in high profile games. But once upon a time the closest we’d get to romance was going to several wrong castles or chasing after a gang who punched a girl in the stomach and carried her off. Long story short, romance and comanionship in video games have come a long way and there are a lot of great couples in gaming.
